Project Description
Twenty-eighteen was an interesting year in and for Tel Aviv, to say the least. How many of these can you relate to?
1. Saw Netta Barzilai win Eurovision
We all listened to “Toy” over and over, and got chicken noises stuck in our head for months.
Keywords to know: צַעֲצוּעַ (toy)
Transliteration: tzah-ah-tzoo-ah
2. Watched the World Cup
It was playing at nearly every bar in the city, and the final games were even streamed on giant screens on the beach. Everyone came out to support their favorite teams, or simply join in on the festivities.
Keywords to know: גְּבִיעַ הָעוֹלָם (the World Cup), but everyone says מוֹנְדְּיָאל (mohn-dee-yahl)
Transliteration: gvee-ah hah-oh-lahm
3. Used an electric scooter
2018 was the year of the scooter. Everyone got one, and if they didn’t, then they tried out a friend’s or took a spin on one of the Bird scooters that popped up everywhere overnight.
Keywords to know: קוֹרְקִינֵט (scooter)
Transliteration: kor-kee-net
4. Got hit by an electric scooter
With all these new riders zooming around (especially on the sidewalks), nobody is safe!
Keywords to know: תְאוּנָה (accident)
Transliteration: teh-oo-nah
5. Voted in the municipal election (hopefully!)
Okay, surely not everyone did their civic duty, but many did — especially because this year it was an official day off.
Keywords to know: לְהַצְבִּיעַ (to vote)
Transliteration: leh-hatz-bee-ah
6. Attended a protest
So many protests happened in 2018.
There were huge protests on violence against women, against the massive gas platform being built near the coast, against the lack of bike lanes, against the ever-rising cost of living in this city, and many, many more.
You’re not a true Tel Avivian if you didn’t get out there and protest something this year.
Keywords to know: לִמְחוֹת (to protest)
Transliteration: leem-chote
7. Complained about rent
Rent prices in Tel Aviv just keep getting more and more ridiculous. Surely everyone complained about this fact at least once this year.
Keywords to know: שְׂכַר דִּירָה (apartment rent)
Transliteration: schar deer-ah
8. Ate at a vegan restaurant
Since Tel Aviv has become one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the world, even meat lovers are trying out the trendy and tasty new vegan restaurants that continue to open up. Yum!
Keywords to know: טִבעוֹנִי (vegan – male), טִבעוֹנִית (vegan – female)
Transliteration: tee-voh-nee (male), tee-voh-neet (female)
