Artificial intelligence is taking over the world – so how do you say it in Hebrew?
The word for intelligence in modern Hebrew is חוכמה (chohch-mah), but for AI, we use a more ancient word that appears throughout the scriptures: בינה (bee-nah), wisdom.
Artificial in Hebrew is מלאכותי (meh-lah-choo-tee), which comes from מלאכה – meaning craft or labor. Since בינה is feminine, the complete phrase becomes בינה מלאכותית (bee-nah meh-lah-choo-teet).
Here’s the beautiful part: the verb להבין (leh-hah-veen) – to understand – shares the same root as בינה. Hebrew therefore suggests that there’s a deep connection between understanding and wisdom, or maybe that through understanding we can gain it.
